Windows 7 RC on the Dell XPS 420 : Update

May 5th, 2009 | Tags: ,

No exaggeration … this thing is a dream. I am running with 8GB of RAM and that may have something to do with it, but I am really happy to be running RC 1 on this machine. I don’t have any new or enlightening screens, just this non-stop praise to Microsoft for this OS.

I have found a couple new features I like:
1) Uninstall Windows Media Player/Media Center. First, I like Media Center and will keep that for watching TV. I abhor Windows Media Player. Its an ugly beast. As you can tell I am a Zune user and prefer that for media. It is MUCH cleaner and light weight. It should be the default OS media player. As a stand alone media player it really whips the llama’s ass.

On the Dell Mini 9 I will uninstall both components to save disk space.

To uninstall, go to add/remove windows components, scroll down, check the box and okay. easy peasy

2) alt-prntscrn now open the Snipping Tool by default. So if you want a screen shot you can use the native MS screen shot tool (which is very effective – I use it at work daily). In the days of yore, alt-prntscrn would only caputre the desktop to the clipboard, then you would have to paste.

I’ll get some screens up here soon showing both features.

I have a Dell XPS 420 and have had several problems with Windows 7 64 home premium. Officially Dell isn’t supporting Win 7 on the 420 and as such there are no drivers on their site.

If i install Firefox i will have issues with MS Office applications locking up.

I am having problems with my external eSata drive. If works at first but after a period of inactivity it becomes non-responsive cause Explorer to lock if you navigate to it and also causing the shutdown process to fail. Occasionally my USB devices fail to respond.

I have spent hours (more than 8) on the phone with Dell and MS trying to figure this out and get the “best” drivers loaded but the above problems still persist.

Has anyone else experienced this? Found any solutions? Is there a schedule for Win 7 Drivers for the 420? Dell says no.

    Thanks. Steve
