My Windows 7 Beta Install
The Set Up
AMD Turion 64 2.00 Ghz
2 Gigs of RAM
Machine was purchased in February of 2006. Its battery is effectively worthless – W7 in fact tells me my battery is bad. The laptop wears the “Vista Capable” badge.
It was delivered with Windows XP Home and upgraded to Vista Basic 32 bit. I downloaded and acquired a key for Windows 7 64 bit so it was unable to install from the OS. I had to boot from the DVD.
The Windows 7 .ISO, once burned to a DVD, will boot and run a clean install. There were some rumors that you could only upgrade to Windows 7 beta – these are false. Anytime you try to run a newer version OS install from within the OS and not from a boot disc it will upgrade. Regardless, upgrade is *not * mandatory. So I wiped and reformatted the HD – this was going to be a perfectly clean install. The install was *fast* remarkably fast. From accepting the EULA to entering the key was about 18 minutes.
Initial Performance
So how does it run? Awesome. The first thing it did was look for hardware updates, it found three; one of which was the video driver. This was nice because at install I only had 1024×768. I now run at 1280×800. This laptop ran Vista, but not well. Windows 7 runs very very smooth – a *very* noticeable difference..
Here is a shot of the first desktop shot. with IE8 starting to run:
The Enhanced Toolbar
The first thing you notice is the new Taskbar. I think this is the biggest interaction improvement from XP or Vista. If you used Vista you will be familiar with many of the features. If you come from XP you will need to learn alot.
Paul Thurrott does not like this new “Enhanced Taskbar” but having used it for the past few hours I think it is going to be hard to go back to Vista’s Win95 based bar. Don’t get me wrong either, I like Paul’s opinions a lot, I just think he is a bit harsh on this feature. To describe it simply, it combines “alt-tab”, the original task bar, and the interactive application based features of the system tray. So to manage windows you can use just the taskbar. “Is it an app or is it a shortcut?” Does it matter? no, you click the icon for what you want and interact with that.
The most obvious new function is being able to sort through explorer tabs from the Taskbar. So when you have multiple tabs open, you can shuffle through thumbnail previews of the open web pages as you want. One cool feature is when you hover over the thumbnail the window maximizes in the background – when you move your mouse that window minimizes. The next cool feature in the new Enhanced Toolbar is monitoring downloads in the task bar:
In the above screenshot you see that the IE icon is partially filled with an odd green color – this indicated how much of my download is complete. when the icon is filled, the download is complete. With 6 meg download speeds this wont be used much except for only the largest of downloads.
I have had multiple applications open since I installed and I have not used alt-tab – my old friend – once. I frequently have multiple browser windows open at work so when/if my employer rolls this out it will be a very welcome addition.
There is some sexiness too. When you scroll your mouse over the series of icons the animation transition is pretty sweet. The video card in this laptop blows so I am eager to see it on a real machine (see Win Experience Score below).
What about UAC
I found that with Vista UAC got better as time went on, don’t know why, don’t care. I just had patience with the thing. In Win7 you have more control from the outset over UAC functionality.
Other Features
The Control panel got a slight face lift. The “advanced” control panel menu is the default. This is not as irritating as it was in Vista because the interactive features have been updated. Most notably when you select a Control Panel feature the activity appears in the same window and the blue vertical bar on the left expands to display specific options. Its subtle and effective.
Libraries are the evolution of My Documents and User Folders. My guess is that it organizes all files by file type, regardless of where located on the hard drive. The implementation looks very nice. I have not yet even thought of the Folder tree. In XP and earlier systems the first thing I would do is customize certain folder locations. I did this because I would have limited disc space on partitions and because I hated the My Documents system. When I install Windows 7 on my main tower I will route all my special (photos, videos, etc.) folders to an external drive for storage. Regardless, the way the folders are laid out has enough to not make me miss the folder tree. Network connections are way, the Downloads folder is right there. Apart from that … what do you need?
I have not messed with Homegroup yet because I don’t have any other machine with Windows 7 on it.
For those that were wondering … Zune runs very well in Windows 7.
So in sum this has been a fun few hours. I am trying to grab a 32bit download, but it looks like even at 2 am PST Microsoft servers still don’t want to cooperate. As for this install it runs better than Vista did on this hardware and *far* better than XP did even with a 3.0 score:

Hi my wife has the 1501 and i burned a windows 7 dvd it installed on my desktop fine but 1501 won’t boot from same dvd why?it boots from vista dvd no problem
Hey Mike
If I understand your comment correctly, you are trying to boot Windows 7 from the install disc after you installed Windows 7 on your system.
Not being able to see your system I can really only tell you the steps I would take to troubleshoot the issue you described.
First, booting from a DVD is a BIOS issue, not an OS issues, so make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the DVD. Alternatively, when the machine is booting press the f8 key. You should get some boot options from that screen.
Secondly, on Vista and Windows 7 systems there is a delay set into the DVD boot process which requires the user to hit any key to boot from the DVD; have you seen that screen?
Hopefully this was helpful – let me know.
thanks

I have an Inspiron 1501, and after upgrading to the Windows 7 RC, I can’t install display drivers for my ATI Radeon Xpress 1150… Is this the same graphics card you have? I’ve seen other people online having the same problem
Ronnie
I have not installed the RC on the 1501 so I cant speak from experience there.
I did install the original Beta on the 1501 and all display drivers installed just fine. I’ll check which version, etc. and update here later.
I did install on my XPS420 with an ATi 2600HD card. The drivers on the ATi download site installed perfectly. The supplied video drivers sucked, to be sure.
I’ve also just installed the RC on my 1501 and can’t get the ATI Radeon drivers to install. Worked fine on the Beta with the drivers being offered via Windows Update. Not sure what to do now?
Tim
I think I will try to install it on my 1501 to see what happens – see if I cant find a fix.
stay tuned.
Christian
I finally managed to get the drivers to work, using some information from a post in the AMD Game Forums. I had to download the older 9.3 Catalyst driver, unpack it, edit a .inf file and update the driver manually via Device Manager. You can find the full details here: http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=279&threadid=111846&enterthread=y. Took me hours to find the solution, but happy to have it all working now!
Tim – glad to hear. I have not had a chance to drop it on my old 1501. How dies it run?
@Christian Windows 7 is now running perfectly on my 1501. Really liking the new OS, so may well upgrade my main desktop PC too!
I can’t install the “ricoh” chipset drivers on my inpiron 1501, I’m trying to use the new windows 7 RC, and can you help me please
@christian leng
Wow, the Ricoh chipset drivers. Can you give some more details? Maybe send a link to a screenshot?
did your wireless work out of box? i’ve successfully installed the broadcom driver for my 64-bit 1501 install yet it is refusing to detect any networks
Loving win 7 on the inspiron also, the only problems I’m having are I can’t change the screen brightness (moving the slider in the option for this makes no difference) and using any of the special fn keys on the keyboard to adjust brightness or volume etc don’t work. Is there any way you know to get this working?
@Alb
See if you cant gra the latest vista video drivers from Dell
Vista Forums: http://www.vistax64.com/drivers/68042-driver-support-dell-inspiron-1501-a.html
Has a few drivers
Here is the age for Dell’s drivers: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_1501&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid
Grab the Vista drivers, should work.
My Inspiron 1501 Laptop is supposed to have 1gb of RAM. It says so on the system properties, but when i use the upgrade adviser, it tells me I have 896 MB of RAM. Can I just ignore this and upgrade, or should I update everything? I have no money for hardware upgrades so if someone could please respond quickly.
And my HP Pavillion Desktop has Windows 7, and I could’ve upgraded to 64-bit but I foregot. But if it’s 32-bit, could i upgrade to 64-bit w/out formatting my HDD?
@Josh
All systems reserve some portion of RAM for system use. My guess is that your video card is using that RAM. W7 will likely not install on just 896Mb of RAM. I would recommend at least 2Gb. Check out deals on RAM here
As for your Pavillion – you will need to clean install to got to 64Bit.
@Christian
Thank You for the advise.
About 1501 with 896mb of available ram. I just installed win7 on there – so much better than vista! Everything appear to work out of the box. Installing the ATI display driver right now (gotten it from amd.com)
i have 1501 with the amd sempron tag and have just upgraded to windows 7 (evaluation copy)and i cant download the display driver from dell website. not sure what to do. assist please
What a great help.
I amy need direct contact with you.
life saver great job.
Hi Christian ! I’ve just seen your post about installing windows 7 on Dell’s Inspiron 1501. after reading these blog wooot! I’m so excited installing windows 7 pro on my dell inspiron 1501 two… Hopefully it will work just fine! LOL

By the way.. my current OS for now is Windows Vista Home Basic with a base score of 2.8
how high will it increase in windows 7?
Man! my laptops performance increase! I’m beginning to love windows 7.. though my brother is using it on his desktop PC..
@Bryan James
Dude, awesome to hear! glad it worked out … and within 3 hours
Hey christian, i have a question, how come your graphics index rating is 3.0? mine remains at 2.8, but my 3d and gaming index rating is 3.2?
oops! my mistake
the link that i’ve just added is not working.. you can view the image by copying the link to the URL box instead of clicking it. my mistak.
Hi Christian,
Great blog thanks!
I have the same model Dell as you…Battery is effectively dead since December 2008. But I’m looking to upgrade to Win 7 from XP (reboot installation). This might be a stupid question, but do I need a 64 bit version of Windows?
Hey
@Jason Smith
this might help,
It depends on what is your system specs, before installing 64-bit windows 7 on your dell inspiron 1501 you might want to check if your system have atleast 1Ghz or higher processor speed, 2GB or higher Memory/RAM(though Dell Inspiron is only 2GB/max) and 128MB or higher graphics card.
Christian,
i have a dell inspiron 1501 with a amd turion 64 processor and 2gb ram. previously i had vista running until a few days ago when i formatted my hard drive and did a fresh install of windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. it runs great and i love it but i have 2 problems. i have no driver for my sound and my memory card reader, neither of them work. ive tried downloading both of the drivers on dells website and once downloaded, i open and run them in my downloads folder and then a window pops up from dell driver download manager saying there are no files to download, please go to drivers and downloads to select files. can you help me find a way to install these drivers or some other drivers that will fix my problem?
Did you try to use 64-bit Vista Driver for Dell Inspiron 1501?
yes i did and it would not install
How about the 32-Bit drivers? have you tried it?
i installed wins 7 ult on my inspiron 1501….now i cant find my wifi anywhere…its not on device manager..i tired to download all the drivers from dell for the 390 lan mini driver card or something like that,,,,after i try to install the driver it says “opertion system not compatable:
